Hundreds of locals gathered in Burke Square throughout the day as part of the international day of climate action. A specially designed trailer of 12 bikes connected to the power grid and a domestic solar array collected enough green-power to hold a carbon negative screening of the inspiring environmental film ‘The Age of Stupid’.

The bike power event was kicked off by the Daylesford Murray-to-Moyne cycling team, the Wheelsuckers, and capped off by a race between members of the Daylesford Netball and Football club who met the day’s target with just 20 minutes to spare. In between members of the public were able to pedal and measure their energy contribution. Around 200 people rode in all and generated 2218 Watt hours of electricity.

The event was one of 5200 in 181 countries calling for strong action and bold leadership on the climate crisis. The events focussed on what has been called the most important number for humanity: 350. Climate scientists say that 350 parts per million CO2 in the atmosphere is the safe limit for humanity.

As well as pedalling and participating in a ‘Big Picture’ participants celebrated the practical initiatives the community is taking to move to a sustainable future. Hepburn Wind has raised over 90% of the funds needed to build Australia’s first community owned wind farm and will start construction in the first half of next year. The Sustainable Hepburn Association (SHARE) — which by November will have installed 116 grid connected photovoltaic systems  — distributed information about new solar hot water and solar electric community purchase schemes.

In the evening over 120 people gathered in the Daylesford Town Hall to watch ‘The Age of Stupid’ followed by informal discussion over supper.
